If you want to know about the level of political discourse in any given country, look at the way its media talks about the president.
By “talk about the president”, I don’t mean that they say nothing but positive things about them or, conversely, speak nothing but ill of them. I mean that they can have a civil discussion about the president and his policies, expressing support when one agrees or voicing firm-but-polite disagreement when one dissents. Sadly, it appears that America in recent years has departed far from this vision and set in its place a sort of circus in which commentators struggle to top each other in vitriol and outrageousness.
Don’t believe me? Look at the way journalists – not random people on Twitter or social media, actual bona fide journalists – discuss Trump. They don’t simply say they don’t like him: they are actively hoping he meets an untimely demise.
