Owners Cynthia and Robert Gifford of the Liberty Ridge Farm in New York have been fined $13,000 for refusing to host a gay wedding.
The Gifford’s host approximately 12 weddings at their farm per year, but refused to host one for a lesbian couple as they feel it would violate their religious beliefs.
But the New York State Division of Human Rights ruled that because the Liberty Ridge Farm is open to the public for specific events, like weddings, it must be classified as a “public accommodation.” This places the farm under a sexual orientation non-discrimination state ordinance.

Government abuse of power at it’s worst. How about starting a funds drive to help this couple pay the fine?
Conscience is a funny thing. It must rely not only on personally held beliefs but an informed sense of right and wrong. Equal rights will always cause these conflicts and asking people to respect one another’s “good conscience” rights is probably asking expecting more than average people can honor. Ethicists should develop guiding principles for lawmakers and judges, which help us craft “fair but not equal” treatment (laws and policies).
I’m a teacher and I have to tell kids (all different) that I’ll be fair and firm but not equal in my application of class discipline. After we talk about examples of why equal may not work because we must honor our differences, they get it.
Their business, their choice, plain & simole.
