DOJ to “promote religious freedom” in Schools, Especially for Muslim Students Who Experience “discrimination” or “bullying”

Government to Promote Religious Special Treatment

As you may have guessed, the religion the U.S. government and bureaucrats are promoting is Islam. One of the first introductions to Islam that most Americans had was during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson when the Muslim Barbary Pirates where in their heyday of attacking U.S. vessels and kidnapping and holding for ransom U.S. sailors. Contrary to President Obama’s recent declaration, however, Islam has had very little influence or visibility in our history or the growth and development of the United States. More recently, many Americans were introduced to Islam (and the Middle East in general) by way of the oil embargo during the Jimmy Carter administration when Arab states put a stranglehold on our economy by cutting off our petroleum supplies and driving oil prices up dramatically. Shortly thereafter Americans saw Iranian “students” take over the U.S. embassy and hold over one hundred U.S. citizens captive for over a year. These activities combined with a perception that they were connected somehow with the Islamic religion, led to a fairly negative and justly deserved perception of Islam by most Americans.

The murderous sneak attack on the Twin Towers in New York that killed almost 3,000 U.S. citizens on 9/11 truly brought home that there is a cultural war that has been declared against the West, and that Islam is part of the foundation of that animus towards the U.S. And certainly more recent activities and calls for death to America by Islamic leaders are based in part of the desire for the death of American religious beliefs and practices. And yet, the takeaway for the Left is that Western ethics and religion are the problem, and Islam is the ethic that must be promoted and protected. Perhaps the old rhyme about the enemy of my enemy is my friend is being practiced here, with the enemy of the Left being western religion. In any case, the surreal objective recently announced by government officials is to provide special help and protections for Muslims in our public schools, not the other way around.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) says it plans to “promote religious freedom” in schools, particularly for Muslim students who allegedly experience “discrimination” or “bullying” from other students in the nation’s public schools.

The federal schoolyard-policing plan is intended to “combat religious discrimination in schools and other educational settings,” according to Vanita Gupta – head of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.

“These efforts will help us combat discriminatory backlash against Muslim students and students perceived as Muslim. But they will also benefit children of every background and every religion,” she said in a speech at the Interagency Roundtable on Religious Discrimination in Education in Newark, New Jersey, on March 8.

Gupta continued;

Regrettably, our country has not always lived up to the promise of its founding ideals.  Even today, too many people continue to suffer discrimination, harassment and violence simply because of their religious beliefs.  Following heinous acts of terrorism in particular, too many Muslim Americans – and those perceived as Muslim – suffer a backlash of violence and discrimination.  We saw it after 9/11.  And we continue to see it today following the tragic events in San Bernardino, California, and Paris.  We see criminal threats against mosques; harassment in schools; and even reports of violence targeting Muslim Americans, people of Arab or South Asian descent and people perceived to be members of these groups.

In December, Attorney General Loretta Lynch hinted at the new initiative when she urged Muslim parents attending a fundraiser for an Islamic advocacy group to contact both the DOJ and the U.S. Department of Education if they think their children are being “bullied” in school.

The education department defines “bullying” so broadly that it provides a justification for federal policing of many normal schoolyard disputes or even political arguments among teenagers:

Bullying is defined as a form of unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-age children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance and that is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time…  Verbal bullying is a form of intentional aggression that involves saying or writing things that are mean or hurtful to others.

The public schools have been bending over backwards to accommodate and promote Islam on our schools, including special lessons and indoctrination programs that many parents have take extreme umbrage with. Rather than bullying against Muslim children, it seems that schools, let by the Federal Department of Education and state education departments, have been doing everything possible to promote the religion exalt the religion with our youngest and least experienced students.

You can also rest assured that the atrocities of 9/11 and the recent attack in San Bernardino, or the ongoing extermination of Christians in the Middle East by various Muslim groups are not being presented or discussed in our public schools. And while it is true that not all Muslims are terrorists or believe that the West should be destroyed or made to submit to Islam, various surveys suggest that at least one quarter of adherents believe that to be true, which extrapolates to about 350 million Muslim people who believe that to be true. And that extends to Muslims in the U.S. where additional surveys show that almost a third think our country should be placed under Sharia law.
And yet the Department of Education thinks the problem lies in aggression against Islamic school children?  This is just one more indication that the federal government should have no part in local education and the U.S. Department of Education should be abolished.
