Here’s a video on how to make an emergency water filter backup from common household items. This DIY water filter is conveniently small so having a couple for backup is still quite easy to bring along.
Always follow traditional safety standards when handling or drinking water that might contain harmful bacteria or other pathogens.
Nice info for filtering out larger objects from the water, but it seems like he is carrying extra gear.

Cool
The second cap is for the bottom so nothing gets in while packed away. Cotton balls are small so you can keep a tiny baggie in there with the iodine tabs or what ever you care to use, after the water is in the second vessel. If your worried about weight then you can place a sandwich bag also in the pill bottle to collect the water in the first place. The whole thing with extra supplies will be less than half a pound and last for days.
A few more items for the BOB…
Shane, Water was never “sipped straight out of the river.” Unless your at the fountainhead that’s absurd b/c of many reasons – one being that animal feces in river water will harm you. That’s why you boil the water or use the pills.

“Personally I use the Life Straw filtration tube and it works GREAT – but kind of pain if you need more than a mouthful or more of clean water for cooking since it’s basically a large straw. Sooo, my 3-day survival backpack also contains a bottle of purification tablets – used primarily when cooking just to be safe.”
