To Deny Democrats an Excuse For a Government Shutdown, President Trump Defers Funding For the Border Wall Until the Fall

Despite the decision to forego funding the wall now, President Trump remains fully committed to the wall as an integral part of the border security needed to stop the flow of drugs into America and keep gang members from illegally entering as well.

The president may have realized that with Democrats ready to shut down the government over the wall and many lawmakers in his own party skeptical of it, there was little chance of reaching a deal on his signature campaign promise before the Friday night deadline.”

Among the GOP skeptics is House Speaker Paul Ryan, who previously stated he did not want to include the wall funding. However, it does appear that increased funding for border security may find its way into the pending legislation, with both parties indicating they can support funds for more surveillance technology and an increase in border patrol agents.

While so-called mainstream media may portray the Trump decision to not insist on wall funding now a policy reversal, the president remains adamant that a wall must be built eventually.

Rep. Louis Gohmert of Texas, one of the president’s staunchest defenders among Republicans, is urging Trump supporters to be patient.

He said we would build a wall and Mexico would pay for it, … but he never said when. Some things just take time and don’t occur real quick. I think that’s the way with the wall.”

The border security posture will allow more reluctant members of Congress to get behind the overall spending bill, and put the Democrats in a much more difficult position to force a government shutdown.

Obviously as President Trump comes to the end of his first 100 days in office, Democrat leaders were hoping for an excuse to embarrass the president and tarnish his efforts to declare the first 100 days a success.

In a meeting with conservative reporters yesterday, President Trump indicated he is more open to getting funding for the border wall in September when Congress will debate the 2018 budget. In the meantime, work is moving ahead on getting bids submitted to design and build wall prototypes.

Rush Limbaugh says he’s ‘not happy’, that this appears to be a ‘cave’ by the president:
