Although it is important that we question everything we read, it is just as important that we do not let the government control what we read.
Thanks to unprecedented advances in technology, people are able to access information at rates and levels that would have been unimaginable even a couple decades ago. We can store information that would have taken entire libraries to fill in times past on devices no bigger than our hands today, and transmit it faster than anyone could have dreamed of. This has made it possible for ordinary people to not just find news, but disseminate it as well.
The downside of this is that since everybody can share news, anybody can, leading to misleading and even outright false stories spreading. Even worse, this gives the busybodies in Washington a pretext to exert their control over alternative media.

More knee-jerk reaction from the problem
can the people use this bill to shutdown the government when they create a f**e news story (i.e. the attack on benghazi consulate was because of a youtube video)?
So in order to have money for troops we have to sell out the first amendment. Makes sense.
How about in order to keep your Social Security just give up your guns.
I hate America “leadership”.
We are doomed to Novus Ordo Seclorum.
Your chip is coming soon.
Isn’t this the Alien and Sedition Act all over again?
Sounds like an attempt to shut down real news to me!
I think a better option would be that websites should clearly state their sources and mission. Similar to the food labels. I’m sorry, but too many people believe everything they read on both sides of the aisle. If you read something that supports all your beliefs it is easier to believe than if it contradicted your beliefs. You read with a more critical eye if it is contradictory.
So when the government keeps lying to us does that fall under this act or is that politics as usual, is this just for us peasants?
Its been going on for years its just now been made legal.
I agree that f**e news is a problem because when acts are originated due to falsehoods nobody is served. My question to those of you who disagree with this bill is this:
What is your solution? Don’t merely state a problem. Offer a solution. At this time I don’t have an answer but I’m not trashing the attempt to deal with the problem either.
Jonathan Scribner All I can say is,, Yes, all… But NO,,,, I am NOT a lemming like you clearly are… My problem is that I am only one vote in a Nation of 390M votes. I remember very long time.
