Cokie Roberts: Trump ‘Has to Share Responsibility’ for the Violence in Charlottesville

Aging feminist Cokie Roberts has been a leading media liberal for decades, thanks in no small measure to her heritage as the daughter of Congressman Hale Boggs and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs, who succeeded her husband after his mysterious death.

On ABC’s This Week, she lit into President Trump, claiming he bears responsibility for the awful events in Charlottesville.

Well, the president has to share responsibility. The fact is, is that through that campaign, he blew all kind of whistles that those of us who grew up in the Jim Crow South, like I did, recognized immediately.”

Roberts chided the president for “not calling out” white supremacists as his U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley did while governor of South Carolina

Did the former anchorwoman ever criticize President Obama for never using the term “radical Islamic terrorism?” Because that’s the case, can the same logic she uses mean that Mr. Obama was sympathetic to ISIS, Al Qaeda and other radical Islamic groups?

Cokie Roberts no more grew up in the Jim Crow South than Donald Trump did. She was raised in privilege in Washington D.C. and her time in Louisiana certainly didn’t put her at ground level of the Jim Crow era.

But, she didn’t limit her attack to President Trump. She threw in Attorney General Jeff Sessions for good measure. After all, he grew up in Alabama, and we all know what that means!

This is also a really watershed moment for the Justice Department. Because it’s not just categorizing these hate crimes. Jeff Sessions has gone backwards on a lot of these things having to do with race. Taking a look at the Obama federal investigations of how police treat people of color. He’s saying, ‘let’s not do that anymore.’ He’s saying ‘let’s keep voting rights suppressed.’ He’s doing a lot of things that send signals to these white supremacists.”

Can Ms. Roberts produce quotes supporting what she attributed to Attorney General Sessions? Certainly not. She simply was engaged in fake news at its worst.

Missing in her commentary was any mention of the gross lack of leadership displayed by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer. Did she ask why the local police held back from keeping the rally participants and counter-protesters apart, or why the Virginia State Police seemed so hesitant? No.

That’s because she was pushing the fake news narrative: It’s all Donald Trump’s fault.
