City Requires Residents Get Letter of Recommendation, Complete an Essay to Acquire Gun License

Gun Policy Blatantly Illegal

It is astonishing that with crime rates soaring, and the threat of religious terrorists looming, that government leaders would seek to disarm law-abiding citizens who simply want to protect themselves and their families. It is also clear that the criminals who abuse guns will not be subject to the onerous regulations because they are, by definition, criminals who ignore the law.

That means that the police superintendent prefers to put town members in harms way and to then send a sympathy card to the victims who will inevitably suffer loss due to this policy. Of course you can be sure that the superintendent has his own well-armed security detail, but apparently his life is much more valuable than that of the townsfolk, so his position certainly seems reasonable.

The policy requires anyone seeking a license-to-carry to take a gun-safety course. Anyone applying for an unrestricted gun license must state in writing why they should receive such a license, and to provide additional documentation, such as prior military or law-enforcement service, a prior license-to-carry permit, or signed letters of recommendation.

Taylor did agree to work with one resident, a trained firearms-safety instructor, to help shape a training course applicants will be required to take. The trainer, Randy Breton, strongly criticized Taylor moments earlier for what he said was intentionally expensive training to dissuade anyone from applying for a gun permit.

“It’s beyond ridiculous,” Breton said of courses he looked into. One costs $1,100 over five days, and another doesn’t offer any sessions through the rest of the year in Massachusetts.

Taylor, as head of the Police Department, may unilaterally set the firearms policy. After public comments and discussion lasting more than an hour, the council voted unanimously to put the new policy on file, and to support Taylor meeting with Breton to discuss training options.

Taylor and the city council refuse to recognize research showing that states with higher rates of gun ownership actually have less crime, rather they look with envy to places like Australia and the United Kingdom that have essentially banned guns and confiscated weapons from citizens.

It clearly is a symptom of the broader problem where the government distrusts the public and seeks in ever increasing ways to cow the citizenry and to trample their rights and freedoms.
