Darth Vader was quick to come to Chewbacca’s aid, claiming that the arrest was illegal because Chewbacca was his pet and servant and did not require documents. There have been many Darth Vaders in past elections, many of whom legally change their names and run in costume.
A statue of Vladimir Lenin was given a makeover and unveiled in a new guise as Darth Vader last week, in response to a Ukrainian law banning symbols of the Communist past.
Chewbacca’s arrest was not the only controversy on election day. More significantly, the vote was cancelled in the city of Mariupol, close to the front line between pro-Ukraine forces and Russia-backed separatists. The official reason was due to spoiled ballot papers, and there are plans to reschedule the vote in a fortnight.
In other major cities, including Kiev, there will be a second round of voting for the mayor, after no candidate received more than 50% in the first round. Kiev’s incumbent mayor, the former heavyweight boxer Vitaly Klitschko, is expected to win comfortably in the second round.
Election time is always interesting in Ukraine. And while Ukrainians continue to use corruption as a tool for putting people in office, many are still awaiting the new kind of politics promised after the Maidan revolution last year.
