4. David Petraeus
While stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq, former director of the CIA and four-star general, David Petraeus, met Paula Broadwell. The pair became intimate and Petraeus probably figured he had gotten away without being noticed. Broadwell eventually published a biography titled All In: The Education of David Petraeus, revealing the affair. Entirely apart from the moral question, Petraeus’ activities demonstrated a vital security risk and the FBI began an investigation. David Petraeus finally resigned as Director of the CIA in November 2012.
Sadly, Petraeus is just one of many whose lack of self-control put him in conflict with his official position.
