New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey appointed Golan Cipel as his homeland security adviser, but questions were raised due to Cipel’s lack of qualifications and inability to get a security clearance (he was an a citizen of Israel, not the United States). A news interview that touched on questions about Cipel’s appointment as security adviser led to further investigation. Eventually, McGreevey admitted to a homosexual affair with Cipel. He resigned from office in 2004 and left politics.
