A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.
The draft hole can be further away than shown and slanted a little. This is a GREAT fire. Good one too remember 🙂
U should b able to control the heat by blocking air on intake side , can’t wait to try this
he could have cut the time it took to make this video in half, informative but aggrevating to watch as he explains and moves like a turtle.thank the Lord he already had the holes dug,or it would have been 45 minutes long.
Thanks for the video, this is a neat and safer way to have a fire.
Google rocket stove. Used for heating homes same concept in reverse very efficient
Thank for sharing my video on here guys! The Dakota Fire Hole is a great skill to have. As a word of caution though, try to avoid making this in an area where there is a dry root system as they can stay lit for a long time, even after burying them. This can cause a more serious problem. Having said that, I’ve used these quite a bit as a stealthy way to cook over a fire while on the trail. They create a lot less smoke, and offer a convenient cooking surface built-in.
I’m going to look at this more. Smoke and light discipline is key to not being seen or found
I use this method Except for areas that burning roots and underground fires are likely.
