A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.
After all the fires we’ve had the last few weeks, I’d be inclined to go with something more fire safe. We’re here in the Willamette Valley, Oregon and still getting smoke from the fire east of us more than 20 miles away. The grass is not green, it’s brown and dry. If you’re going to have any kind of fire on the ground, you need a hose running and nearby. In an emergency that’s just not going to be available. I’ll stick with my hobo stove on a rock or cement block in a place sheltered from wind, thank you.
I did a video on that and isn’t on my YouTube it’s a great source of heat
love learning about this. God bless u all.
Seems as if it would be easier to extinguish as well.

This dude talks WAY too much.
Jeez oh pete’s could this guy prattle on any longer about a hole in the ground??? yea Capt. Obvious a rudimentary furnace is not “news” and only some city slicker would have a hard time figuring this out on their own. We have raised a nation of idiots who don’t posses basic skills for survival without an ipad and a grocery store
I wanted to put him in the hole because he wouldn’t shut the hell up.
Build it under the trees to dissipate the smoke
Awesome knowledge Brent !!!!! Thank you Brother!!!
