A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.
And if you roll a small can of pork n beans in the hole it will explode… Showers your buddies with hot beans. Very entertaining!
People have done this since fire existed, it’s not a ‘Dakota’ fire
Could have told us in under 7 minutes if he wasn’t so friggin redundant !
I’ve got one. It’s called a butt hole in some places.
An old coffee can (metal), a roll of toilet paper and a some rubbing alcohol make an awesome heater/cooker burns clean…be careful though…INVISIBLE FIRE and no smoke!
the reason they call it dakota fire hole is cause in south dakota you can have a fire but no smoke i just got this explained to me by some nim rod here lol ok not sure if thats why but sounds just about right
Wish I could get that wasted time back….
thanks for posting this , good to know
it is not a DAKOTA hole, its just a simple hole that has been used for many of decades now. them folks did not discover something that i was taught 35 years ago
