A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.
A fire like this encircled by rocks can be used in a shelter. Better maybe if the survival man would have used this his shelter wouldn’t have burned
neat
Good idea neat and quick
Still have to be careful with fires inside a shelter, even a Dakota Hole. cO levels could rise a bit too high, and then you have a whole different issue. I prefer a small long Fire and a reflector to keep warm. Direct the reflector to push the heat into your shelter, and keep the nastiness outside.
Why not carry a grate that will fit over the hole? Cool Idea. He could have talked less and I’d have been happy.
Cool
My grandson knows how to build one of these. We use them for hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows.
Seems how the Hawaiians cook their pigs at luaus?!
