A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.
OMG, thank god I’m a country boy…. Sigh
Not to mention that you can cook with an even temperature in a very high wind.

Renee Ochsenbein survival skills!
we may need these sooner than you think!
Just don’t do it near trees or other thick rooted vegetation because you will cause fires that might not appear for days. Always be careful where you burn even underground. You might just wake up to an inferno if you aren’t careful. Just a thought.
also, using a foot air pump or a bike pump through a siding shaft will help the fire burn hotter and more clmpletely, creating far less smoke!
