A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.

Web site sucks. You can’t get past the commercials to find the video. I gave up.
Dakota fire pit works very well. Basically 2 holes connecting at the bottom. Fire in one and the other feeds nothing but air. Extremely Efficient.
Also, low smoke and virtually eliminates high wind problems. If you need to leave quickly, fill in the hole with dirt , fire goes out.
Very ingenious.
coleman 500 speedmaster would have had it boiling in less than 1/2 the time
Every Boy Scout knows how to do this, its not new.
Jim, I guess my scoutmaster didn’t know this cause I don’t ever remember making a fire that way! I can see the benefit of doing it that way though.
Greg you werent paying attention, I have been involved in Scouting as a leader for 24 years, my oldest son is a Eagle Scout and my youngest son is a Life Scout and you will find illustrated instructions in the Scouting Adventure book, your Scoutmaster was probably a great guy who took time out of his own life to help in the Scouting movement but he faile to teach you essential outdoor survival skills, but maybe I’m prejudice, because was the merit badge counselor for camping and backpacking. lol
