A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.
Tishers says:
“In GS (girl scouts) we would make a little half-tipi (teepee) out of twigs and a bit of fabric and put that over the mouth, Turn the tipi so it catches the wind and it kinda acts like a furnace for the fire”

informative and helpful
in the army you say “FIRE IN THE HOLE” before detonating a explosive
sometimes, depending on soil, the airflow can be cut off from the “center piece” between air hole intake and fire/heat exhaust colapsing..and yes, once some good amoint of burning coals have accumulated and you are finished with the cooking and what nit, covering it with some soil majes a good heated bedding to sleep on..nothing will get u pneumonia faster than a freezing cold damp night while sleeping on cold cold ground!.
this fire type certainly keeps the smoke signature down if you are not wanting to be located!
great idea but good grief, i have built fires in fire places faster than he did !
Very good fire pit. I’ve built and used them several times. If you take green twigs and lay them on top of the hole, makes a good grill for the cooking. If done correctly, it makes a cool sound as the fire draws air from the vent hole.
Is this the way to roast a pig?
A three minute demonstration that took 13 minutes. I almost wanted to set fire to my monitor.
