Sweet Cakes by Melissa, the bakery renowned for standing for one’s religious beliefs, is refusing to pay the $135,000 fine levied by the Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian.
The gay couple who refused to take their wedding cake order elsewhere, filed suit against the Kleins, when their religious convictions about gay marriage hurt the feelings of Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer. Read more on page 2.
Courageous? This is just wrong
Why is it wrong? Would it be easier on everybody if they just went ahead and catered to everyone? Sure. Hell, they’d probably even make more money. But they have their beliefs, it’s their privately owned business, and they should have the right to deny anyone service as they see fit. It’s their business. Just like the gay couple wants to have their rights, so do these bakery owners. They shouldn’t have to suffer and pay out ridiculous sums of money because they’re simply uncomfortable doing something that goes against their beliefs. I think it’s incredibly childish and wrong for this couple to insist on trying to make them pay. Go to another bakery. Why would you want somebody to serve you that don’t support your beliefs anyway? It’s very crappy of the couple to insist on going after this bakery when they could easily have found another bakery that wouldn’t mind serving them the way they want. It’s wrong for this couple to have blown this up to what it was and now there are death threats against these bakery owners. It’s outrageous. They should have the right to have their beliefs and not be scrutinized and attacked for it (so long as it’s not harming anyone).
Good for them.
Privately owned businesses should have the right to practice business as they wish. Regardless of whether anyone agrees with their choice.
Exactly Trena. The gay couple wants their rights…well so do the bakery owners. The couple can go to any other number of bakeries that I’m sure would be more than happy to take their money. People should not have to have their business negatively affected because of their beliefs. It’s their privately owned business, they should have the right to deny service as they choose. This couple is childish and spiteful going after the bakery owners like that.
Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.
I believe God is watching right now,and due to what just happened at that college where the shooting took place,God is not happy with the state of Oregon right now.
Good job way to go
If Islam faith is protected by our Constitution, then so is the Klein’s religious beliefs. They should not have to pay this extortion.
Pay damages? What damages? Did the bakery break something? Did they destroy your property? Oh wait…did they do something to your place of business to cause you loss of funds so you can’t pay for your kids lunches, school supplies, and clothes? No. They said no we won’t bake a cake. Cake mixes are .99 to $2.99 on any grocery shelf. Back in the day there was this saying SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP. Instead of waiting for a lawsuit to give you free money you don’t deserve, how about fight it in the good old fashioned way. Get some of your friends that like to bake and start your own business. Even better, make it gay only, better yet, make it a gay only cake shop across the street from this bakery. No one will sue you for it I promise.
Is like saying ” if you try to stop me from insulting homosexuals it violates my freedom of prejudice”
No Ibruse Hoppe, it’s not like that at all. It’s like these people are business owners that hold certain beliefs and don’t wish to serve somebody because it goes against their personally held beliefs. I’m sure they have nothing against the couple as people, but if they don’t support what the couple wants their services for, they shouldn’t have to suffer because it goes against their beliefs and the choose to to take that business.
if only more businesses stood their ground like this and people in general as well.
