Often in libertarian mediums of discussion, the prison industrial complex and its implications on future generations is talked about. While it is true that the war on drugs greatly contributes to the mass incarceration here in the states, placing blame solely on poor drug policy isn’t helping the discussion that much.
In reality, there isn’t one clear cut reason as to why the criminal justice system is the way it is today. It’s a combination of poor policy decisions made over the course of the last half of the 20th century. One of the policies contributing to the amount of Americans behind bars is our embarrassingly long prison sentences.

Its embarr$#%&!@*ing that you can kill and eat a person in Germany and only get 10 years in prison.
Most of the time THE SENTENCE IS TOO SHORT TOO MANY APPEALS THE LIMIT SHOULD BE 2
We keep them entirely too long, especially the lifers.
Most laws are ridiculous now. You can go to jail for not being able to keep up payments. The government or state wants me to do 2 years because I was on a payment program. Quit my job to take care of my father. And failed to make all payments now there warrants out. . That’s not OK. The laws the uphold are ridiculous
So that’s what I get for taking care of my ill. Father who fought for our country and is a retired cop.
So? For some, it’s isn’t long enough! Some should face the death penalty. Druggies won’t go to jail when they obey the law.
Because we can afford to,, but why?? kill those who cannot be fixed and train those for honest work who can…
I was born in the 50’s and if you think you are free you need to look around yourself and just see how free you really are.If not being watched by police they are watching you on camera.Don’t pay your taxes and see if they don’t take everything you own.People with guns are being treated as criminals, many are loosing their farms because of EPA says they are polluting waters.Christians are being treated as if they are devil-worshipers.There are many more things I can write but you get the point.
Is all about the money…
I wish more people understood this. They just don’ the get it. They are paying for these people’s long stays and don’t even realize it.
