Often in libertarian mediums of discussion, the prison industrial complex and its implications on future generations is talked about. While it is true that the war on drugs greatly contributes to the mass incarceration here in the states, placing blame solely on poor drug policy isn’t helping the discussion that much.
In reality, there isn’t one clear cut reason as to why the criminal justice system is the way it is today. It’s a combination of poor policy decisions made over the course of the last half of the 20th century. One of the policies contributing to the amount of Americans behind bars is our embarrassingly long prison sentences.

Because they get “good time”, probation and parole. Texas gives so much good time that, in order for a person to do 1 year, the state has to give a person 10 years. So, when you do your 1 year clean and get out, then that is 9 years of parole that you have to do. If you do 8 clean and then get violated for some reason, those 8 years are wiped clean and you have to start your 9 years all over. In Texas with this system, it is very easy to do a life sentence on a 10 year bid. Does that sound fair, or does it sound like slavery?
Are you kidding me? The ACLU file a lawsuit that prohibits mentally ill people from being thrown in to jail. That is why they are on the streets. Go talk to any prosecuting attorney about their case load and you will find out they do not have time to deal with anything but repeat offenders. Take your self to the courthouse and learn.
