Often in libertarian mediums of discussion, the prison industrial complex and its implications on future generations is talked about. While it is true that the war on drugs greatly contributes to the mass incarceration here in the states, placing blame solely on poor drug policy isn’t helping the discussion that much.
In reality, there isn’t one clear cut reason as to why the criminal justice system is the way it is today. It’s a combination of poor policy decisions made over the course of the last half of the 20th century. One of the policies contributing to the amount of Americans behind bars is our embarrassingly long prison sentences.

Yip
This is one of the reason people hate cops so much.
I am a retired Army Officer with 21 years of service and 6 combat tours. I was arrested as a first time offender for growing my own medical marijuana to treat my PTSD and chronic pain I got serving this country. The state of Alabama placed me on a $3 million bond so I never saw the light of day until I was released from prison 6 years later. The state stole everything I owned. My farm, 2 cars I paid for serving in Afghanistan, wiped out my bank account and retirement funds leaving me 100% homeless once I got out of their 200% capacity prison system. I served 6 years on a 10 year sentence for manufacturing of a controlled substance cl$#%&!@* A felony. Once out I had no money and no place to go so I tried to get food stamps and was told I can never get food stamps in Alabama because I am now a convicted drug offender yet they give food stamps to child molesters, murders and people who rob people. I was 47 years old when I was arrested and have never needed help from my state but now they turn their back on me. Hell I can’t even find a job since I am a 54 year old felon on parole. Is this what the people of this state call justice? Who did I victimize? I am NOT a criminal I am a veteran who fought for this country and whose only crime was growing my own medical marijuana to treat my PTSD and chronic pain.
Bull c**p they’re too short and we need to use the death penalty more and carry it out way quicker
