Often in libertarian mediums of discussion, the prison industrial complex and its implications on future generations is talked about. While it is true that the war on drugs greatly contributes to the mass incarceration here in the states, placing blame solely on poor drug policy isn’t helping the discussion that much.
In reality, there isn’t one clear cut reason as to why the criminal justice system is the way it is today. It’s a combination of poor policy decisions made over the course of the last half of the 20th century. One of the policies contributing to the amount of Americans behind bars is our embarrassingly long prison sentences.

Because our prison system doesn’t yield positive results. It makes non-violent offenders violent and sends them back into the world with a situation that no one could keep up with that inevitably leads them back to prison. So maybe instead of being content w/ the one slave like prison system in the entire world. We could make look for those who have positive results with rehabilitation and work off of that rather than keep making worse and scarier offenders who have less and less of a reason to live. ie less to lose. So more willingness to kill you over $3.
You don’t have to break the law to go to jail. Some are thrown in jail that are blackmailed by the d.a
I personally believe that our criminal justice system is not harsh enough. A person that commits one offence should be punished severe enough that he wouldn’t want to commit a second offence.
You are looking at a victim culture that creates that monster.
Actually, there should be more executions, and less paroles granted!
I onder why, is it because we lock up innocent peole just for the fun of it? Get a grip, do the crime, pay the fine/time.
Because we have a LARGE PRIVATE PRISONS FOR PROFIT system! MONEY TALKS!
Can’t do the time, Don’t do the crime !!!
WAAAAY too many “laws” in the U S. Estimates … over 3,000,000, so many that attempts to count them end in frustration.. Most are absurd.
Maybe it takes our idiot crimminals longer to get it in their heads that crime doesn’t pay than for other countries….
