For those of us who grew up watching cowboy movies and gunfights, we should think at least twice before ever drawing our gun when faced with an already drawn gun.
According to the folks at Active Self Protection, there’s a lot to consider when faced with that situation. They paraphrase the late, great Col. Jeff Cooper, who said owning a gun doesn’t make you a gunfighter any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.
In an instructional YouTube video, the reasons for exercising caution when drawing your firearm are clearly shown. Two different scenarios involving police officers make the point all too well.
Find out what you must consider before drawing your gun on a drawn gun on the next page.
Very good! Everyone should see this!
Prayers for that officer’s family, prayers that those slime bag criminals rot in hell!
The other difference is a “duty holster” vs a CCW holster retention method was all the difference here. Duty holsters have an active retention device that are notorious for being slow and here not only was it slow but also failed to release the gun at all. Very sad
Situational awareness goes a long way. Of course if the conflict can be de escelated that is the best option. The gunfight you are sure to survive is the one that never happens. That is why we have dogs, they will go crazy barking if somebody comes on the property. This allows for an assesment of the chance of evasion before confrontation. Of course laws here in California are tricky so my natural tendency to find cover and concealment and wait for the enemy would probably not fly as a defence in this state if I had a means of escape. I think Ill just let the dogs eat them instead 😉
Time is not on your side, that’s why
Sad, but quite instructive.
You wait till he turns his back and then you pull your Gun
