Paul Ryan Makes Last-Minute Push to Avoid Stunning Primary Defeat

Paul Ryan, the most powerful Republican in government, had a scary couple of weeks before his primary against Republican challenger Paul Nehlen. Despite having campaign funds several times higher than his opponent, Ryan’s primary win was far from a sure thing — and forced a few desperate moves by the Ryan campaign.

In the weeks leading up to the race, Nehlen had been endorsed by several grassroots Republicans, such as Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin. Donald Trump’s public refusal to endorse Ryan up until the last moment also gave Nehlan visibility in a campaign many expected would be a non-starter.

Eventually, Trump decided to back Ryan, and Nehlan lost in a landslide to Ryan, but all indications seem to suggest that Ryan was very worried he would lose. In a last ditch effort to secure votes, Ryan finally caved and scheduled an event open to the press in his home district, something he had for weeks refused to do.
