Tens of thousands of blue-footed diving seabirds, called cassin’s auklets, have turned up dead on the West coast, running from California to Canada.
“This is just massive, massive, unprecedented,” said Julia Parrish, a seabird ecologist from the University of Washington. “We may be talking about 50,000 to 100,000 deaths. So far.” Parrish presides over the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team, a program that has tracked seabird deaths on West Coast seabird deaths for upwards of 20 years.
