A Dakota fire hole requires much less firewood and burns more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. This makes it a very valuable wilderness survival technique in places where firewood is scarce or requires much effort to obtain.
It also creates a stable platform that is very convenient for cooking.
The fire is concealed within a hole limiting the amount of visible light emitted and smoke is also decreased because the wood is burning hotter and more efficiently.
Hehehe…. Dakota Peterson
Watched the video all the way through hoping there would be a warning given to not build this type of fire in dry conditions, especially where much underbrush and roots are present… I’ve been involved in forest fires believed to be extinguished only to see them flare up through fire spread underground… In addition the area around the holes should be cleared sufficiently of any potential flammable growth… Hope anyone using this fire building method takes necessary precautions.
