87-Year-Old Woman Imprisoned For Her Beliefs

Given the broad nature of Germany’s laws against incitement to hatred, it is no wonder that even a senior like Haverbeck-Wetzel would run afoul of them. The laws were deliberately written in such a way that not only are hateful acts punished, but so is hateful speech, something that should frighten anybody who values of freedom of speech. The Independent Journal reports:

Dubbed Nazi-Oma (Nazi grandma) by the media, Haverbeck-Wetzel has a previous criminal record, with two fines and a suspended sentence for sedition.

When she appeared in court, she remained unapologetic for her comment, saying “yes, I said that indeed.”

In Germany, the crime of incitement of hatred refers to actions which inspire hatred or violence towards a group of people based on their religion, race or ethnic background.

Way to go Germany, locking up Holocaust-denying grandmas! You really know how to make the world a safer place!

In 2004 she helped to found an association that helped people who were “persecuted” for denying the Holocaust.

During her trial, members of the right-wing National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) showed support for Haverbeck-Wetzel with applause and flowers.

She has said she will appeal the verdict.
