It’s not just for “Doomsday Preppers”, Disaster preparedness is critical for anyone. We’ve all seen stable cities turned upside down overnight from earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, riots, terrorism & financial instability. If you’re not prepared for events like this odds are: your family will suffer for it.
Even countries like Spain and Greece have experienced chaos caused by financial issues and rioting. Natural disasters can strike anywhere at any time. Yet few people actually take the simple steps to prepare. It doesn’t have to be expensive, time consuming or complicated. Basic disaster preparedness can be the difference between life and death for you and your family.
Here are 3 must know survival tactics everyone needs to know:
First Aid Supplies: The Red Cross suggests 21 simple items for a first aid kit. You can assemble them yourself from any local drug store or pharmacy. These items should be maintained in a separate case & not be part of your everyday supplies in your medicine cabinet. You can also find complete first aid kits for sale. Here are a few examples of must have first aid kit items:
- Adhesive bandages
- Adhesive cloth tape
- Absorbent compress dressings
- 1 blanket
- Antibiotic ointment
- Scissors
- Hydrocortisone ointment
- Oral thermometer
- Tweezers
Emergency Kits: Emergency kits are for basic practical items you’ll need during various types of emergencies. The US Government recommends 11 basic items that should be in any emergency kit:
- Water, one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation
- Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First Aid kit
- Whistle to signal for help
- Infant formula and diapers, if you have an infant
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Dust mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
- Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
Emergency Food Storage: There’s a lot more to storing food than having a bunch of canned goods in your pantry. Many options exist including freeze dried foods, meals ready to eat, canned goods, Stores like Costco even have complete emergency food storage kits you can buy. Some examples of items you should be storing are:
- Whole rice (white or brown)
- Pinto beans
- Canned Fruits
- Canned Vegatables
- Canned Meat
- Peanut butter
- 1 Gallon of purified water minimum per person
- Freeze dried food
Of course it wouldn’t hurt to be familiar with at least basic survival skills and to own a defensive weapon in disaster situations, but that’s a post for another day.
