At the time of President Obama’s announcement creating DACA, then Representative Paul Ryan immediately denounced it as unconstitutional. Now that he’s Speaker of the House, he’s begun to waffle on the issue, and is urging President Trump to keep the program while Congress considers more comprehensive immigration reform.
Joining Ryan in their lack of support for the president’s desire to end the program are four U.S. senators and 13 other congressmen.
Many of the representatives involved come from districts with significant Hispanic populations, districts believed to be targeted by Democrats to flip in the upcoming 2018 election. They include:
Reps. Jeff Denham (R-CA), David Valadao (R-CA), Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Daniel Donovan (R-NY), Don Bacon (R-NE), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Will Hurd (R-TX), Martha McSally (R-AZ), Scott Taylor (R-VA), Dave Reichert (R-WA), Dan Newhouse (R-WA), and John Faso (R-NY).
Most of the Republicans challenging Trump are targets of Democrats seeking to win back the House next year and represent districts that will help determine the House majority,” the Hill reported on Friday. “Six of these lawmakers wrote to Trump earlier this month imploring him to leave DACA in place until Congress can pass immigration reform.”
Curbelo, along with many Democrats, have filed amendments to the spending bill funding the Department of Homeland Security that will provide money to keep DACA in place.
The senators opposed to ending DACA include: Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Orrin Hatch of Utah, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Jeff Flake of Arizona. No doubt John McCain is on board as well.
Last Friday, Senator Hatch released a statement urging President Trump to not rescind DACA in order to let Congress work on a permanent solution for how to handle the future status of those here under the DACA program, people called “Dreamers” by Democrats and the media. Hatch uses that terminology as well.
Over the coming months, I’ll be working closely with my colleagues in Congress and with the administration to pass meaningful immigration reform that will secure our borders, provide a workable path forward for the Dreamer population, and ensure that employers have access to the high-skilled workers they need to succeed in our technology-driven economy.”
President Trump has acknowledged the difficulty of the issue, noting that he will address with “heart.” During his presidential campaign, he took time to note many young Americans “have dreams” and they need help as well.
As DACA supporters keep drafting amendments to save the program, it’s worth noting that the House Rules Committee, which is controlled by the House leadership under Ryan, will decide whether any of the amendments will get floor votes.
When interviewed by a Wisconsin radio station last week, Ryan stated his opposition to ending DACA. “This is something that Congress has to fix.”
No matter what President Trump decides and how he explains it, the mainstream media will work diligently to find a way to use it against him. Should he decide to keep it, then he will be accused of breaking a campaign promise. If he ends it, then he will be again labeled “racist.”
